Bulgaria, Northern Macedonia step up co-operation in agriculture, transport and SMEs

Bulgaria and the Republic of Northern Macedonia signed three memoranda of cooperation in the presence of the prime ministers of the two countries, the government’s press service announced on Tuesday. The official signing took place after the joint meeting of the two government delegations in Sofia.

Minister of Agriculture Ivan Ivanov and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy of Northern Macedonia Ljupko Nikolovski signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two ministries for cooperation in the fields of agriculture, agricultural science, rural development and agriculture. The document envisions promoting co-operation between the two countries in the field of agriculture through the exchange of information and the transfer of know-how, the exchange of good practice, the implementation of joint research projects and cross-border co-operation in rural areas. Bulgaria undertakes to share its experience with access to the EU Pre-Accession Assistance Facility.

A joint project team of Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia is part of the task of developing a project to develop the railway link between Sofia and Skopje, assessing investment costs and researching funding opportunities from the EU and international institutions. This is provided for in a Memorandum of Understanding on the development of the Sofia-Skopje railway link between Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia as a basis for negotiations. The document was signed by Bulgarian Transport Minister Nikolai Sabev and his northern Macedonian counterpart Blagoi Botsvarski.

The railway connection is of strategic and economic importance for the citizens and the economies of the two countries. Its construction will fully integrate the railway networks of the two countries in the trans-European transport network.

Minister of Innovation and Development Daniel Lorer and Minister of Economy of Northern Macedonia Kresnik Bektesi signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the Bulgarian Executive Agency for the Promotion of Small and Medium Enterprises and the Organization for the Promotion of Business. The memorandum will help develop bilateral economic cooperation. Recognizing the strategic importance of the development of small and medium-sized enterprises in order to enhance employment, economic and social stability, the Parties undertake to assist the enterprises of the respective countries and to establish various forms of cooperation. According to the memorandum, the two organizations will co-operate in the development of small and medium-sized enterprises, providing real opportunities for expanding contacts between companies from the two countries. The parties undertake to exchange information on trade, investment opportunities, policies and measures implemented by the two governments to promote the internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises. The two sides will co-operate in organizing promotional events for small and medium-sized enterprises.

The governments of Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia held a joint meeting at Boyana Residence, near Sofia, this morning. The meeting took place on the second day of a formal visit by a delegation from the Northern Macedonian government led by Prime Minister Dimitar Kovacevski at the invitation of Bulgarian counterpart Kirill Petkov.

The agenda included a face-to-face meeting of the two Prime Ministers, a plenary meeting of the two official government delegations and simultaneous meetings of four working groups set up in the areas of: 1. economy, trade and innovation, 2. infrastructure, connectivity and transport, 3. European cooperation – green transition, digital transformation and the rule of law, 4. culture, research, education and youth.

Dimitar Kovachevsky will also be received by President Rumen Radev and will meet with National Assembly Speaker Nikola Minchev later in the day.

The two countries are trying to reheat bilateral relations and work out points of friction that are hampering Skopje’s EU accession process.
