Bulgaria: PM urges Moscow to stop spying in his country

The Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov He called on Russia today to “stop espionage” in his country, after prosecutors prosecuted six suspects whom they consider Moscow spies.

On Friday, prosecutors said members of the spy group, which included former and current military intelligence officers, had leaked confidential information about Bulgaria, NATO and the EU to an official at the Russian embassy in Sofia.

In the last 18 months, Bulgaria has deported six Russian diplomats, including a Russian military envoy, on suspicion of spying for Moscow.

“Once again, it may be necessary to declare Russian diplomats undesirable. “As for yesterday’s operation, I again call on their superiors to stop spying on Bulgaria,” said Borisov, from Silistra, where he was visiting. “Friendship is friendship and we have always shown it,” he added.

Russia’s embassy in Sofia said on Friday that speculation about its involvement in the case should stop until a court ruling is issued. He also said that these accusations are an attempt to “demonize” Russia once again.

The United States, Britain and northern Macedonia have expressed support for Bulgaria in the face of “malicious acts” on its territory.
