Bulgaria – Saudi Arabia: Steps for economic, energy and security cooperation

The foreign ministers of Bulgaria and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia discussed co-operation in the fields of economy, energy and security, as well as possibilities for strengthening the political dialogue between the two countries. Teodora Gencowska and Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud had a private discussion today at the Foreign Ministry, after which they presented their most important points to journalists.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the most important partners of Bulgaria in the Middle East, stressed Minister Gencowska. “It is in our mutual interest to expand the areas of economic cooperation between the two countries, where there is an untapped potential, as well as to increase trade. We would like to deepen our contacts in the field of energy, including nuclear. Bulgaria “It has the capacity to provide services and specialists in the field of decommissioning and radioactive waste management. Our country has a long tradition and training programs for energy experts,” he said.

The minister pointed to the defense as another potential area of ​​co-operation and explained that Saudi Arabia has already been invited to participate in the Hemus 2022 military exhibition, which will take place in early June.

The issue of tourism was discussed during the talks, the Bulgarian Foreign Minister added.

“We have considered the possibility of co-operating to overcome the consequences of the war in Ukraine, in connection with Bulgaria’s efforts to diversify its gas and oil supplies,” Genczowska said.

Prince Faisal bin Farhan al-Saud noted that Bulgaria has many opportunities in the military field and that the two countries should work to deepen co-operation in this field. He also said he had briefed Gencowska on the level of security in the Middle East.

“We are working for a ceasefire in Yemen,” he said.

According to the head of Saudi diplomacy, the two countries can also work well together in the private sector. Following the meeting between the two ministers, talks will be held between the two delegations.
