Bulgaria: VMRO Proposes Bulgarian, Northern Macedonian Governments Become Federations

The VMRO-Bulgarian National Movement party issued a statement stating that Bulgaria and the Republic of Northern Macedonia have a common historical and cultural heritage and this is their future course, the Bulgarian news agency BTA wrote in a telegram. One of the topics focuses on Bulgaria’s policy towards northern Macedonia, the party announced at its 8th congress in Sofia on Saturday.

The accession of Northern Macedonia to the European Union depends on the recognition of the historical truth, the Bulgarian roots of its current population and the protection of its rights, the BTA telegram said. VMRO calls on the governments and political organizations of Bulgaria and Northern Macedonia to form a federation between the two countries based on their common cultural and historical heritage and common geopolitical interests.

According to the Bulgarian news agency, the document lists 14 priorities that VMRO guarantees, such as security, education, healthcare and access to culture for all Bulgarians, energy independence based on building new potential (including operating economy and fair business rules, constitutional revisions securing broader powers for the president, a majority system and referendums, deprivation of illiteracy and non-compliance with non-governmental organizations receiving foreign funding for religious education in Bulgaria.

VMRO elected three presidents at its congress. After 25 years at the helm of the party, leader Krassimir Karakatsanov resigned when his party received just over 1% of the vote in the November 14, 2021 elections.

Delegates voted unanimously in favor of the new presidents: Angel Jabaski, Iskren Veselinov and Alexander Sindi. Until now, Jabaski has been the party’s vice president and is a MEP for a second term, Veselinov was also vice president and Cindy was a member of the national leadership. Organizational secretary Julian Angelov was elected general secretary.

Opening the conference, Karakachanov said the country was going through difficult times due to Covid and the economic crisis. Reviewing the past three years, he said that as a member of the ruling coalition under Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, VMRO kept a hard line that “prevented a setback in relations with Northern Macedonia”.
