Bulgaria, a NATO member, will host up to eight Dutch warplanes and 200 troops to assist it in airspace policing missions amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a government decision today.
From April 1 to May 31, the Netherlands will deploy two warplanes on a 24-hour air policing mission, in line with NATO’s comprehensive air and missile defense plan, the government has announced.
“To implement these actions … from March 4 to June 24, up to eight aircraft and up to 200 Royal Dutch Air Force soldiers will be deployed on Bulgarian territory,” the government said in a statement.
Four Spanish fighter jets backed by 130 Spanish soldiers are currently supporting Bulgarian airspace surveillance. The government has decided to extend their mission until April 15.
Bulgaria is also setting up a battle group of up to 1,000 troops in close co-operation with the alliance.
