The European Commission and Bulgaria have agreed to set up a first regional working group in Sofia, as part of the EU Energy Market Platform, according to a Commission statement. This pilot project will look at gas and electricity needs, prices and flows, as well as infrastructure aspects. It should be noted that after Gazprom announced yesterday that it was suspending gas supplies to Bulgaria, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Asen Vassilev had a series of meetings with the Commission.
The regional action group will focus on next year and provide specific regional know-how for the development and implementation of the REPowerEU action plan to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels, replenish storage for next winter and further accelerate carbon sector in the energy sector. It will support and coordinate the implementation of joint preparedness plans in the region, including international markets, storage and interconnections – thus contributing to security of supply in Bulgaria, the region, the energy community and beyond.
Bulgaria will contact neighboring countries and hold its first ministerial meeting on May 5th. The work of the task force will be based mainly on the European Commission ‘s preparations for certain energy cut – off scenarios, in close coordination and solidarity with Member States and international partners.
