Revenues of Bundesliga football clubs for the period 2020-2021, shrank more than 8.5% to 3.47 billion euros from 3.8 billion euros, as the coronavirus led to the conduct of most games without fans, announced the German Football Association (DFL).
In a report, it announced that the decrease in revenue was particularly evident in ticket sales, which amounted to 22.4 million Euros in 2020-2021, compared to 520 million in the period 2018-2019, before the pandemic.
In December 2020, the DFL had forecast a drop in turnover of around € 1 billion for the 2020-2021 season if fans had to stay out for the rest of the season.
“Over the last two years, the pandemic has already had a dramatic economic impact on the Bundesliga. Unfortunately, it also affects the current season, mainly because once again the stands had to remain empty,” said Donata Hopfen, a spokeswoman for the DFL executive committee.
The report points out that clubs have become much less willing to invest heavily in new players as transfer revenue saw a further significant drop to € 469 million, down from € 533 million in the 2015-2016 season.
“We are facing an unprecedented situation. The era of development as something that should be taken for granted seems to be over. Without a doubt, this will greatly affect our development in the coming years,” he added.
