Germany and the European Union are considering whether to list Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock said today.
“I made it clear last week that we will start another package of sanctions, that we will look at how we can also list the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization,” Burbock stressed in an interview with the ARD television station.
Her comments come after the head of the Revolutionary Guards warned protesters that Saturday would be the last day they would take to the streets, in a sign that security forces may intensify an already tough crackdown on the widespread unrest.
The Iranian regime has been facing for weeks an unprecedented wave of popular discontent and widespread protests caused by the death of Makhsa Amini.
Germany last week said it was tightening entry restrictions on Iran on top of the already announced EU sanctions package.
The German foreign minister also said that there are currently no negotiations on the nuclear deal between Iran and the West.
