Armed Islamist militants have killed at least 100 civilians in a rural area in the north Burkina Faso at the weekend, according to a local security img.
For at least 50 civilians killed by attack jihadists in the village of Seitenga spoke the government spokesman, Lionel Bilgo.
“The army has so far found 50 bodies” after the attack in the village of Seitenga, Bilgo said, adding that the toll “could rise”.
The village was the site of bloody battles last week.
Eleven gendarmes were killed there on Thursday. A military operation ensued that killed about 40 jihadists, according to the military.
Islamic revolutionary groups have been active in the wider region for years.
In the Sahel region, the jihadist uprising has claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people in the last 7 years and has forced about 1.9 million people to flee their homes.
