The head of the junta in Burkina Faso, Lt. Col. Damimba, who was ousted on Friday by Captain Ibrahim Traoré, finally agreed to resign today to avoid clashes that would mean human and material losses, announced religious and community authorities, who mediated between the two sides .
Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Saandaogo Damimba set seven conditions to accept his resignation, including guarantees for the safety and non-persecution of the military who supported him, guarantees for his own safety and rights as well as those of his colleagues, respect of commitments made to the Economic Community of West African States (Cedeao) to return power to politicians in two years.
Religious and community leaders, who wield great influence in Burkina Faso, said Captain Traoré had accepted the terms and called on the population “for calm, restraint and prayer”.
