Burla: We will need a fourth dose of vaccine for the Omicron mutation

We will need to do a fourth dose of vaccine earlier than expected, according to Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla.

“When we look at the data in the real world, we will determine if the Omicron mutation is well covered by the third dose and for how long. And the second point is that I think we will need a fourth dose,” he told CNBC.

Albert Burla initially expected that a fourth dose would be needed 12 months after the third, but as he said yesterday he sees that it will be needed sooner. “With Omicron we have to wait and see why we have so little information. We may need it faster,” he said.

It is recalled that on Wednesday, Pfizer and BioNTech announced that their study showed that three doses of the vaccine provide them with enough protection against Omicron.

Albert Burla said that what is most important at the moment is to make the third installments due to the winter. Public health officials are concerned about the increase in infections, as people are more concentrated indoors.

“A third dose will give very good protection I think,” he said, adding that treatments such as the Pfizer antiviral pill would help prevent hospitalizations and control Covid during the winter.
