Bus accident in Alagoas completes one month without forensic examination

The accident that left 20 people dead in Serra da Barriga, in União dos Palmares, Alagoas, completed one month this Tuesday (24), and is still awaiting a detailed examination.

THE bus involved in the tragedy remains at the scene of the accident which has prevented the internal inspection from being carried out, which is essential for the conclusion of the investigations and inquiry. The information was confirmed by the Civil Police of the State of Alagoas to CNN this Thursday (26).

Experts warn that the unstable position of the vehicle represents risk of new disasters .

The Maceió Criminalistics Institute reported that, due to the precarious conditions of the bus, which is in a forested area that is difficult to access, there is no security for experts to carry out a detailed investigation into the internal parts of the vehicle. The instability of the bus on the bank makes movement in the area difficult and puts the integrity of the professionals responsible for the investigation at risk.

The Alagoas Civil Police reported that they are awaiting the removal of the bus to continue the investigative process to understand the dynamics of the accident, determine the causes of the tragedy and identify responsibilities. However, to do this, the vehicle must be lifted safely.

According to police information, the bus must be removed from the area using a 200 meter long steel cable.

The accident was recorded on November 24, when a school bus, provided by the Municipality of União dos Palmares, with 47 passengers on board, lost control on the way up Serra da Barriga due to a mechanical failure.

The vehicle overturned and fell more than 400 meters down a cliff. The victims, aged between 5 and 84, were mostly tourists heading to the Quilombo dos Palmares Memorial Park.
