Bus driver who hit and killed firefighter in Copacabana is indicted for murder

Bus driver Valdir das Mercês Júnior, 29, will be held responsible for intentional homicide – when there is intent to kill – in the case of running over Fire Department officer Gilson Castro Silva, 58, who died instantly.

The crime took place on the morning of January 1, on Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana, one of the busiest in the South Zone of Rio.

According to the conclusion of the investigation of the 12th DP, in Copacabana, the accused purposely ran over.

Júnior was indicted for double qualification, for a futile reason and for an appeal that made it impossible for the victim to defend himself.

Images posted on social networks show that the firefighter was standing in front of the bus, preventing the collective from passing. The bus driver accelerated, knocked the man down and ended up dragging the victim.

According to the Civil Police, after analyzing the various images obtained by the investigation, it was possible to see that Gilson was dragged for more than 50 meters, indicating a “clear intention of the driver to run over the victim”.

Police officers also found that the author lied in testimony, as he claimed he saw the victim leaving the front of the collective before continuing the journey.

Initially, the case had been registered as manslaughter (no intent to kill). However, the following day, the police had access to the images and temporarily arrested the accused for intentional homicide (when there is intent to kill).

In addition to the indictment, the 12th DP also asked the Rio de Janeiro Justice to convert the temporary prison (30 days) into a preventive one (with no determined time).
