Two buses were set on fire, on Monday afternoon (29), on Avenida Presidente Kennedy, at one of the accesses to the town of Barro Vermelho, in Duque de Caxias, in Baixada Fluminense. The Fire Department was called around 3pm. There were no injuries.
The fires reportedly occurred after gunfire in the region, according to reports from residents. The Military Police denied that there had been a confrontation with criminals. The corporation also reported that it was patrolling the community with an armored vehicle that suffered a mechanical failure.
Intelligence information from the PM indicates that criminals, after seeing the presence of the armored vehicle, set fire to the collectives in an attempt to close access to the Barro Vermelho community. Policing is reinforced in the region.
According to the Federation of Mobility Companies of the State of Rio, a single burned bus stops transporting around 70 thousand passengers per month. Last year, according to the institution, around 60 vehicles were burned across the entire Fluminense territory. In the last ten years, the public transport system has lost 267 buses destroyed by acts of vandalism.
