A German businessman, Peter Karl Jugl, has sparked outrage with his plan to turn a World War II underground tunnel system into a luxury retreat for wealthy people fearing the outbreak of World War III. The proposal, which involves the use of a cryptocurrency, ‘BunkerCoin’, as a ticket to access the bunker, has drawn strong opposition, particularly from relatives of the prisoners who were forced to build the tunnels under the direction of the Nazis. The History of the Tunnels The tunnel system was built by prisoners in an annex of the Buchenwald concentration camp, near the town of Halberstadt, about 120 miles southwest of Berlin. About 7,000 forced laborers were incarcerated in the camp, most of whom died digging the 8-mile (13 km) long tunnel in which the Nazis built aircraft in the final phase of the war.
