Businessman Wilson Campos de Almeida Neto, 48 years old, was sentenced on Thursday (28) to 26 years and eight months in prison in an initially closed regime, for the qualified homicide of his partner, Gisely Kelly Tavares Santos.
The penalty was determined by the 2nd Court of the Jury of the Capital, which considered that the crime was motivated by a futile impulse, with no chance of defending the victim and with characteristics of femicide.
The trial was held at the Rodolfo Aureliano Desembargador Forum, in Recife, under the presidency of judge Maria Segunda Gomes de Lima. The defendant was arrested after the decision and the businessman’s defense has already filed a request to appeal against the conviction.
The trial resumed on Thursday, after being suspended the previous day to complete the interrogation of the accused. During the session, the Pernambuco Public Ministry (MPPE) defended the conviction for feminicide, while the defense argued that the shot that killed Gisely was accidental.
The oral debates between the parties were followed by the reply phase and the vote by the Sentencing Council, made up of randomly selected jurors. The final decision was read by the judge who presided over the trial.
THE CNN contacted criminal lawyer Célio Avelino, responsible for the defense of Wilson Campos de Almeida Neto, but he has not yet commented on the trial.
Remember the case:
The crime took place on July 19, 2017, when Gisely Kelly Tavares, financial director, was found dead in her apartment in the Rosarinho neighborhood, in Recife. She had a gunshot wound to her head, and the crime scene indicated shooting at close range.
Security cameras recorded the moment the couple entered the building around 50 minutes before Wilson Campos de Almeida Neto left the place alone, already wearing different clothes.
The investigation revealed that the weapon used in the crime had marks of blood and strands of the victim’s hair. During the trial, the defense maintained that the shot was fired accidentally. Initially arrested, Wilson was released during the Covid-19 pandemic, obtaining house arrest due to health problems.
