That so many women practice self-eroticism is an established fact. The exploration of one’s body and one’s pleasure is part of the male and female human nature and doing so is even recommended by sexologists, because getting to know each other in depth even under the intimate aspect helps to fortify the personality and improve couple relationships.
Two and more years of pandemic, between restrictions and lockdowns, have also contributed to increasing the practice of masturbation in men and women forced into prolonged solitude, as evidenced by a survey conducted on five European nations, including Italy, fromIfop, the French Institute of Opinion Polls. The photograph that emerged shows that in our country, in particular, the phenomenon of female autoeroticism is growing, with an increase from 67 to 74 percent.
Still «Masturbation Gap»?
Yet, again according to the survey – which involved a total of 5025 women – while the men who claim to do it at least once a week are 50 per center, in the case of women the percentage stops at 20. For many, in fact, talking about masturbation is still considered taboo. And not only. Often, due to cultural heritage, it is precisely the women themselves who judge the most “open” ones in this sense, and this seems to depend mainly on the education received, the environment in which they grew up, the serenity with which they approach everything related to sex. A model of thought that feeds what has been defined the “masturbation gap” between men and womenor the gap that exists in the ease with which men speak and practice masturbation compared to the reluctance shown by women.
In short, female autoeroticism is still considered something embarrassing, which should not be done and which in any case is not talked about: the basic concept of a perfect “sexual miseducation”.
A “socially legitimate” practice
Yet something is changing. Solicited by a more direct communication and by celebrities from the world of music, entertainment, culture, than with theirs sex positive approach they transmit the most pleasant and beneficial sides of autoeroticism and general sexual well-being, especially the new female generations face their sexuality with less modesty and are more likely to ask and ask questions about their body and their pleasure.
Masturbation comes increasingly perceived as a socially legitimate practicethanks also to entrepreneurs like Gwyneth Paltrow, who with Goop, her business dedicated to the well-being of women, has widely cleared the conversation about sexual practices and objects of pleasure, or to artists like Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, who in their songs they claim self-eroticism from a feminist perspectiveand again to film productions such as Black Swan and The To – Do List e tv series like Orange is the New Blackwhich multiplied the scenes relating to female masturbation, accelerating the process of “normalization”.
