By 2026, 25% of people will spend at least one hour a day in the metaverse

Gartner predicts that by 2026, 25% of people will be spending at least one hour a day in the metaverse, working, shopping, learning, socializing, and having fun.

“Vendors are already creating ways for users to replicate their lives in digital worlds,” said Marty Resnick, vice president of research at Gartner. “From attending virtual classrooms to buying digital land and building virtual homes, all these activities are currently taking place in different environments. Ultimately, they will take place in a single environment – the metaverse – with multiple destinations linked to technology and expertise.”

Gartner defines the metaverse as a collective virtual shared space created by the convergence of virtual augmented physical and digital reality. It is persistent, provides an enhanced immersive experience, and is device agnostic and accessible through any type of device, from tablets to head-worn displays.

Since no single vendor will own the metaverse, Gartner expects the virtual economy to be supported by digital currencies and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). The Metaverse will impact every business that consumers interact with every day. In particular, enterprises will be able to improve the interaction between employees without having to create their own infrastructure. In addition, virtual events, which have gained popularity over the past year and a half, will offer more collaborative and exciting networking opportunities and workshops.
