The Russian president Vladimir Putin signed an order today requiring the Russian government to take control of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant of Zaporizhia and that its facilities be included in the “federal property”.
The nuclear plant, Europe’s largest with six nuclear reactors, is under the control of the Russian military but has been operated by Ukrainian personnel until now. Its proximity to the front lines of hostilities has heightened international fears of a nuclear catastrophe.
According to Putin’s decree, a state-owned enterprise named NPP Zaporizhzhya (“Zaparosskaya Nuclear Power Station”) should be established in which the plant’s ownership status will be secured.
Earlier, the head of Ukraine’s state-run nuclear power company said, Reuters reports from Kyiv, that he was taking responsibility for the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant and called on workers at the plant not to sign any documents with its Russian occupiers.
Energoatom chief Petro Kotin made the remarks in a video speech posted on the Telegram messaging app, despite Russia saying it plans to monitor the plant’s operations.
The videotaped speech followed the brief arrest by Russian forces of the Ukrainian head of the station, where Ukrainian staff still work.
“All further decisions regarding the operation of the plant will be made directly at the headquarters of Emnergoatom,” Kotin said, adding that “we will continue to work on the basis of the legislation of Ukraine, within the framework of the Ukrainian energy system, within the framework of Energoatom ».
