By May we will have left the pandemic behind us, says an Italian scientist

The number of coronavirus deaths in Italy is on the rise today. In the last twenty-four hours 313 people have lost their lives and the cases recorded are 196,224.

The Tuscan region, however, said that the current death toll included 37 patients who had died in the past six months and had not been recorded due to miscalculation. The positive for the virus, at this stage, in the country are 2,222,060.

In total, 1,190,567 diagnostic tests were performed today, 16.5% of which were positive.

After a series of days, for the first time the number of patients with Covid-19 in the intensive care units is decreasing: it is 1,669, ie 8 less than yesterday. 17,309 patients with coronavirus are being treated in hospital wards.

However, according to Mateo Bassetti, head of the Infectious Diseases Clinic at San Martino Hospital in Genoa, “by April or May at the latest we should have left the pandemic behind, and we will probably be able to take off our protective masks.”

Bassetti also predicted that “by the end of the spring, 95% of the country’s population will have been vaccinated and more than 50% of Italians will have been infected with the virus.”
