A cable car collapsed at a resort in the Spanish region of Aragon this Saturday (18), injuring dozens of people, nine of them very seriously and eight seriously, the region’s government said.
Around 80 people remain trapped, hanging from the cable car at the Astun ski resort in Huesca province, according to state TV channel TVE.
“It’s as if a cable had come loose, the chairs jumped and people were thrown out,” a witness told TVE.
The cause of the cable failure remains unknown.
Management at the ski resort declined to comment and was unable to immediately say whether foreigners were among the injured.
Several helicopters were working in the area to rescue skiers still trapped on the chairlift and transfer the injured to nearby hospitals.
The ski resort of Astun, popular mainly with Spanish skiers, is located close to the Spanish border with France, in the Pyrenees mountain range.
