Cable car accident leaves at least four dead in southern Italy

Four people died and one was seriously injured after a cable car crashed into the Naples region of southern Italy on Thursday (17) said rescue services.

The accident happened in Monte Faito, a peak about 45 kilometers southeast of Naples.

“The cabin at the top fell,” wrote Umberto de Gregorio, president of the EAV public transport company, which manages the cable car service on Facebook, calling the occurrence of “a tragedy”.

Several Italian press reports said one of the cables that supported the cabin broke.

Sixteen passengers were rescued from a booth that stopped in the air near the base of the mountain.

They were removed one by one, using seat belts, as they showed images of public television Rai and other media outlets.

Vincenzo de Luca, authority of the Campania region, told Rai that rescue operations were harmed by fog and strong winds.

In 2021, 14 people died in Italy when a cable car connecting the north of Lake Maggiore to a nearby mountain fell to the floor.
