A rescued dog turned police mascot has become one of the most beloved furry sensations on the internet in Brazil.
Nicknamed “Cabo Oliveira”, the dog was taken in by Rio police officer Cristiano Oliveira, who found him in 2019 near his police station abandoned, injured and hungry.
The dog – dressed in a police uniform, toy gun and sunglasses – became the official mascot of the 17th Battalion of the Military Police of Rio de Janeiro, patrolling alongside its officer and racing alongside motorcycles.

“I took a coat, a police shirt and put it on for fun. I took a picture and sent it to our broadcaster’s squad and posted it there”, said Oliveira. “And then the joke started to go viral.”
Now, the furry cape has his own Instagram account with over 117,000 followers.
“If I don’t post a photo for three days, people are already demanding ‘Where is Oliveira?’ ‘Where did Oliveira go?’” the policeman said, laughing.
