Cade expects to complete investigation against Petrobras in two months

The president of the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade), Alexandre Cordeiro, expects to conclude within two months an investigation against Petrobras for abuse of dominant power.

“We are going at our normal pace, but the investigation is already mature. We should have worked in the next two months,” Cordeiro told CNN . If the infraction is proven, the state company can be fined or even forced to sell assets.

Cade is investigating whether Petrobras practices abusive prices for holding a very relevant share of oil extraction in the country. The state-owned company also plays an important role in refining and practically no longer operates in retail after the privatization of the former BR Distribuidora.

According to experts in defense of competition, it is difficult to prove the practice of abuse of dominant power, because the prices practiced by Petrobras are below or in line with the international market.

Cordeiro explains, however, that other factors must also be analyzed. According to him, the agency will also assess Petrobras’ production costs and profit margin in relation to what is practiced by other oil companies.
