The Administrative Council for Economic Defense (Cade) opened an investigation to determine whether Petrobras abused the recent increases in fuel prices. The company must be notified this Monday (17) to provide clarification. The opening of two administrative inquiries took place last Thursday (13).
The president of CADE, Alexandre Cordeiro, opened the ex officio procedures based on news and public documents about the successive fuel readjustments.
The investigation will be conducted by Cade’s superintendent. The purpose of the investigation is to find out whether Petrobras abused its dominant position in the country’s oil market, which could lead to punishment, such as payment of a fine.
There is no deadline for completing the process. The assessment at Cade is that the inquiries are not strong enough to prevent the adjustment of fuels, since the variation in prices depends on a combination of factors, such as the exchange rate. But they serve to demand explanations from Petrobras and may have an impact on the company’s conduct.
The Ministry of Economy, through the competition area, became aware that the investigation is ongoing.
