Singers Caetano Veloso and Toquinho got together for a partnership, released this Friday (19). Together, the musicians released a new version of the song “Tarde em Itapuã”.
The song that brought together the two legends of Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) is part of Toquinho’s new project – “Novas Cores, Eternas Canções” –, an album to be released next year with re-recordings.
The new version adds electronic beats and accelerates the pace of the version that became popular in the country. “Tarde em Itapuã” was one of the most famous partnerships between Toquinho and the poet Vinicius de Moraes.
Vinicius was going to deliver these lyrics, written on Itapuã beach, in Salvador, to be set to music by Soteropolitan Dorival Caymmi, but Toquinho “stole” the sheet with the typed verses and took it home to produce a melody.
“It was an important song because I gained his trust, musically. He had a reasonable age difference for me. I was 22 when I started working with him, and he was already the great Vinicius, partner of great musicians”, said Toquinho, in a press release.
I saw that poem and offered to set it to music and Vinicius, not scolding, but almost, said: “You’re 22 years old, I’m going to give this song to Dorival Caymmi”. And Dorival Caymmi had to respect himself. So, I stole the poem, made a song, and after he (Vinicius de Moraes) heard it several times, he called me and said: “Now I won’t give it to Dorival, it will stay like that”. At that moment I think it was the most important song in my relationship with Vinicius because I gained his trust.

For the re-recording, Toquinho wanted to do it with Caetano because of his colleague’s relationship with Bahia: “Caetano has that Bahian denguise and has been a great friend for over 50 years. He is a man who represents Bahia definitively.”
In turn, Caetano said he agreed as soon as he received the call. “It’s a unique samba, written by a carioca and a paulista about a mythical point in Bahia. I’ve been happy to sing it since it was released,” he stated.
Afternoon in Itapua
An old bathing suit
the day to loiter
A sea that has no size
And a rainbow in the air
Then at Caymmi Square
Feel lazy in the body
And on a wicker mat
Drink coconut water
It’s good
Spend an afternoon in Itapuã
In the sun that burns in Itapuã
Listening to the sea of Itapuã
Talking about love in Itapuã
While the sea inaugurates
A brand new green
argue with sweetness
With a cork cachaça
And with a forgotten look
At the meeting of sky and sea
very slowly go feel
the whole earth rotate
It’s good
Spend an afternoon in Itapuã
In the sun that burns in Itapuã
Listening to the sea of Itapuã
Talking about love in Itapuã
After feeling the shiver
From the wind that the night brings
And the so-so-so-so soft
That sprouts from the coconut trees
And in the serene spaces
No yesterday or tomorrow
Sleep in brown arms
From the moon of Itapua
It’s good
Spend an afternoon in Itapuã
In the sun that burns in Itapuã
Listening to the sea of Itapuã
Talking about love in Itapuã
Spend an afternoon in Itapuã
In the sun that burns in Itapuã
Listening to the sea of Itapuã
Talking about love in Itapuã
