Caetano Veloso will receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa at a university in Spain

Caetano Veloso will receive the title of Doctor Honoris Causa through the University of Salamanca, one of the oldest in Spain and the world. The honor, given to personalities and scholars who stand out in their fields, will be presented during a ceremony in June.

In addition to the musician, three other people also receive the title this year, including Colombian professor Norberto Garcia Cairasco, who works at USP’s Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto (FMRP), Argentine anthropologist Rita Segato, and Spanish sociologist María Ángeles Duran.

The application was presented at the Faculty of Philosophy and Department of Modern Philosophy, with the support of the university’s Center for Brazilian Studies and defended by professor Pedro Serra.

In the text, the professor defended that Caetano, “singer, songwriter, music producer and also a writer, is considered one of the best musicians in the world in the 20th and 21st centuries, integrating the select constellation of figures such as Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Patti Smith, or, specifically from the field of Brazilian music, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Milton Nascimento and Djavan”.

Among other achievements, the candidacy highlighted the more than 50 albums released throughout his career and the new album “Meu Coco”, from 2021, which won the Latin Grammy for Record of the Year last year, in addition to the other 13 Grammys and chosen as Person of the Year in the awards, in 2012.

In 1998, Caetano won the title honorary cause from the University of Bahia and, in 2004, he received the distinction of Commander of the Order of Infante Dom Enrique Order of Cultural Merit, the highest distinction in Portugal. In 2014, for his role in disseminating Latin American culture, he was appointed Honorary Professor by the National University of Rosario, Argentina.
