Caipira Corridor Project seeks to restore forests in the interior of São Paulo

The Caipira Corridor project, led by the University of São Paulo in Piracicaba, aims to stimulate forest restoration in the area that includes, in addition to Piracicaba, Santa Maria da Serra, Águas de São Pedro and Anhembi.

“The region has sugarcane cultivation, it is a sugarcane hub and we have an intense deficit of natural vegetation in relation to what we should have”, said the initiative’s consultant Girlei Cunha, to the CNN Radio .

One of the main fronts of action is the planting of native vegetation. “The deficit is around 10,000 hectares, the project aims to restore 45 hectares, which seems little, but it has an educational purpose.”

The forest engineer argues that “as the areas are reforested, they serve as demonstration areas for surrounding landowners to look to the example and adopt a proactive stance.”

The results, for Girlei, happen in the short, medium and long term.

“In the short term, we have links and links with all the initiatives and linking them with us and with the public power”, he said.

In the medium term, “there is an increase in rural landowners who will adhere to forestry initiatives.”

“In the long term, these restoration areas will begin to produce ecosystem services, with improved microclimate and better water production.”

The forest engineer highlighted the need for society to participate, which, according to him, is concerned about the environment and understands the risks.
