Caixa promises zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2026

Calling itself “environmental bank”, the Box undertakes to reset the carbon emission until 2026, through its Caixa Florestas program. The plan is to reduce 40% of emissions in two years, which involves neutralizing 66.5 thousand tons of CO2 emitted by planting 5 million trees, and reaching 100% by expanding the planting of trees to 10 million and neutralizing 133,000 tons of CO2 emitted.

Caixa Florestas was created in May of this year and among the commitments assumed by the program is the planting of 10 million trees in the next five years and the allocation of R$ 150 million of profit per year to social and environmental projects.

According to the proposal, the intention is also to recover forests, springs and conservation units in all biomes, totaling 3.5 million hectares.

According to Caixa, R$23 million are contracted in financing for the planting of 1.1 million trees and recovery of 2,160 springs, benefiting 963,000 farmers. Another R$31.2 million in projects are under study.

In total, says Caixa, there are R$54.18 million in financing from the Caixa Floresta program for the planting of 3.18 million trees in five years and the recovery of 2,203 springs.

Among the projects for which Caixa has already been contracted by the Ministry of Regional Development there is the Nascentes Vivas Project, in Minas Gerais, involving financing of R$ 10.26 million, for the planting of 450,000 trees and the recovery of 1,500 springs, benefiting 741,000 families.

In Tocantins, Caixa was contracted to finance R$ 6.97 million for the planting of 102 thousand trees and recovery of 640 springs. In Goiás, the Águas Cerratenses Project provides financing of R$ 10.2 million for the planting of 880 thousand trees and recovery of 40 springs.

Another initiative listed by Caixa is the Casa Azul + CAIXA Seal, launched in 2019 to encourage housing projects that adopt efficient solutions in the design, execution, use, occupation and maintenance of buildings through energy efficiency, sustainable production, efficient water management, social development and innovation.

In agribusiness financing, Caixa cites the destination of R$ 11.4 billion in investments until 2022, involving lines such as Inovagro, which seeks to encourage the use of renewable energy, especially photovoltaics. ABC and Pronamp also involving reduction of the greenhouse effect.

Furthermore, the bank includes in the ESG guidelines the financing provided to infrastructure, with a focus on sanitation, citing the destination of R$ 52 billion for the segment. In infrastructure as a whole, there are BRL 204 billion in financing, according to the bank, with BRL 74.81 billion for urban infrastructure.

Caixa’s president, Pedro Guimarães, said that the bank has already started planting 10 million trees that are part of the bank’s goal of zeroing greenhouse gas emissions in five years.

“We started planting 10 million trees yesterday and the plantings are concentrated close to the springs”, stated Guimarães this Wednesday, 3, in a virtual event held by the platform of the Ministry of the Environment.

Guimarães highlighted Caixa’s funding for the less fortunate, recalling that this is an important aspect of environmental preservation. “When we talk about nature preservation, it is not enough to finance the planting of trees as we do, but through microcredit we are preventing the degradation of the environment by people in need”, he said.

“There is a transformation in this government, we take care of the environment and the population,” he added. Guimarães recalled that Caixa is the largest housing bank in Brazil and that 90% of the six million homes financed are popular. “There are 4 million popular houses that came to replace, many of them houses on hillsides that were in deforested areas”, he observed.

According to him, Caixa has more than R$ 150 billion earmarked for preservation and is the only state bank that is seeking the reforestation of 3 million hectares, in addition to microcredit for Brazilians in the 26 states and the Federal District.
