California: Zero-emission cars by 2035

By 2035 at the latest, all new cars sold in California will have to have zero emissions, according to a plan approved by state officials.

Therefore, new cars sold in California will have to be electric or plug-in hybrids.

“Rapidly increasing the number of zero-emission vehicles on the road will dramatically reduce pollution for all Californians,” said Leanne Randolph, president of the California Air Quality Agency, reaffirming the goal set in September 2020 by Democratic state governor Gavin Newsom.

The measure, which has been adopted by other US states, must be approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency.
