Call from Tehran to the International Atomic Energy Agency: “Do not succumb to Israel’s pressure”

The Iran states that it is ready to continue its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the representative of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Kanaani, pointed out on Monday (12/9), calling on the organization “not to give in to Israeli pressure” regarding Tehran’s nuclear activities.

The IAEA’s Board of Governors meets today, three months after adopting a resolution urging Iran to provide credible answers to the Agency’s investigations into traces of uranium at three sites in Iran. Iran has dismissed the probes as politically motivated.

“Iran announces its constructive cooperation with the Organization as its obligation … Iran has obligations, but it also has rights”, Kanaani said in a televised press conference. “The Organization should maintain its credibility.”

The Israel, widely believed to be the only nuclear power in the Middle East, has vowed never to allow Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, saying Tehran wants it destroyed. Iran denies it is seeking nuclear weapons and says its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes.

“Of course Iran expects constructive actions from the IAEA and the members of the Board of Governors”Kanaani stated.

After 16 months of indirect talks between Tehran and Washington, European foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on August 8 that the European bloc had made a final offer to break the deadlock on reviving the deal.

Earlier this month, Iran sent its latest response to the proposed EU text. But Britain, France and Germany said on Saturday they had “serious doubts” about Iran’s intentions after it tried to link the revival of a deal with the termination of IAEA investigations.

Kanaani, as reported by the Athens News Agency, called the European statement “not constructive”.

“The US and Europe should demonstrate that they do not prioritize the interests of the Zionist regime (Israel) while making political decisions,” he said.
