Call me by your name: there will be no sequel

Whenever I listen to even just a few notes of Mistery of love, the song of Sufjan Stevens which is the soundtrack a Call me by your name, my eyes shine as I think back to the scenes in the film. Given these premises, one of my dreams in the drawer, cinematically speaking, is to go to the cinema to see the sequel. Too bad, however, that this desire will most likely never come true because the director Luca Guadagnino in a recent interview he explained that he prefers to devote himself to other projects and that, for the moment, there are no conditions for us to return to the set.

I know you’re just as desperate as I am, but we have to start giving in to the idea that we may never see the story of helium e Oliver on the big screen. But let’s proceed in order: why did we get to this point? Among the main reasons are the allegations that, in recent months, have involved Armie Hammer. There are many women who said they were psychologically and sexually abused by the actor who practically put his career on hold because he was removed from all the projects he had in the works.

Added to this is the dense list of commitments of Guadagnino who is currently on the set of Bones and all, his first film shot entirely in United States. It must be said that, in this case, he found a piece of Call me by your name: the protagonist is, in fact, Timothée Chalamet and there is also Michael Stuhlbarg that is the interpreter of the father of helium. After this there will be a remake of Scarface and a mini series, Brideshead Revisited, adaptation of the novel of the same name by Evelyn Waugh, in which there will be, among others, Cate Blanchett e Andrew Garfield. In short, a very full agenda even if the director admitted that his heart “is still there with helium e Oliver».

And to think that until recently things had turned out very differently. During the last lockdown, Luca Guadagnino had admitted that he was interested in the readjustment of Find me, the sequel novel to Call me by your name of André Aciman. Furthermore, a screenwriter had already been found who would replace the previous one, James Ivory, who had immediately declared that he was no longer interested in returning to work on the same story. The whole project then suddenly stalled.

What to say? Hope is the last to die, but it just seems like the only chance we have to review once again helium e Oliver be yet another rewatch on Netflix.
