The Japanese CIPA Association, uniting Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Ricoh, Sony and other manufacturers of photographic equipment, has published data on sales of digital cameras and interchangeable lenses for August this year. Published data show that sales have slightly decreased compared to July and in the first few months were lower in annual terms.
To be more precise, 654 746 digital cameras were sold during the month, while in July – 659 427. But if the July figure is equal to 100.4% of the indicator for July last year, then the August figure is 95.7% of the indicator for August last year.
A closer look shows that sales of interchangeable lens cameras increased over the month – from 380,829 to 404,942 units, and the second figure is 101.7% of the figure for August last year. On the other hand, sales of compact cameras have declined markedly both monthly and in annual terms. Compared to July, they decreased from 278,598 to 249,804, which is 87.4% compared to August last year.
If you go deeper one level, it becomes clear that compared to August 2020, SLR cameras were sold 11.9% less, and mirrorless cameras – 12.3% more. If we compare the proceeds with this amount, SLR cameras brought in 3.5% more than a year ago, and mirrorless – by 24.8%. The increase in revenue with a decrease in the number of sold SLR cameras indicates a change in the sales structure: an increase in the share of more expensive models in the professional segment and a decrease in the share of entry-level consumer models.
