Cameroon: Kidnapping of nine health workers from a public hospital – Their motives unknown

Nine health workers were kidnapped yesterday Thursday from a public hospital in the northwest Cameroonin an area where clashes between government forces and separatists are raging.

The mayor of the city of Batibo, where the hospital is located, said today that the nine health workers are still in the hands of the kidnappers. The identity of the perpetrators and their motives remain unknown.

A spokesman for the separatist ADF (Ambazonia Defense Forces) operating in the area denied responsibility for it abduction. “It is unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of our liberation movement. Health workers should be protected and not harassed,” he said in a message sent by email to Reuters and relayed by the Athens News Agency.

There are not a few times that health workers employees have been targeted during the civil war that has been raging since 2017 in Cameroon.

Part of the English-speaking population complains of its marginalization by the French-speaking majority of the central African country. Both separatist and government forces have been repeatedly blamed by the UN and non-governmental organizations for crimes involving civilian victims.
