Election campaigns in the United States are entering their final phase, with an intense focus on mobilizing voters to go to the polls on Tuesday (5).
According to the researcher from the postdoctoral program at Unicamp (State University of Campinas) and the National Institute of Science and Technology for Studies on the United States (INCT-INEU), Neusa Maria Bôjikian, both Donald Trump’s campaign and that of Kamala Harris are focusing their efforts on convincing voters to exercise their right to vote.
In an interview with WW this Friday (1st), Bojikian, who is in Washington, highlighted the crucial importance of these last days of the campaign.
“It’s that thing, we have a 50-50, so any minute of the game or any move here that is more strategic, more tactical, now has to do with hand-to-hand combat”, explained the specialist.
Intense field operation
The professor highlighted that campaign teams on both sides are carrying out an intense “field operation”.
“I heard from Republicans here and I heard from Democrats equally. I tried to evaluate, listen to these opinions, and for me I think it’s about getting voters to vote, because they’re not forced to and so they don’t vote,” said Bojikian.
The difficulty in mobilizing voters was exemplified by a report the expert heard from an Alabama deputy.
According to her, the parliamentarian mentioned that “it’s difficult” and that his team and trusted people are leaving to do this convincing work.
Importance of each vote
Bojikian emphasized that because of the American electoral college system, every vote counts significantly.
“You have some states that they say here are neck and neck, it’s glued together, and so I think it would be really winning, convincing this voter at the last minute”, he explained.
The professor compared the current moment of the campaign to the “48 in the second half” in a football match, indicating that neither side will “throw in the towel” at this final stage.
With polls showing an extremely tight scenario, voter mobilization tactics could be decisive for the final result of the American elections.
