Campos Neto signals an increase in the inflation target to 3.5%, say government sources

The president of the Central Bank, Roberto Campos Neto, signaled to members of the federal government a slight increase in the inflation target from 3.25% to 3.5% at the next meeting at the National Monetary Council (CMN) to take place next week, he found out. The CNN .

The information was anticipated in the WW program on Wednesday (8). The Central Bank’s press office said it would not comment on the matter.

As the report found out, the objective is to deflate pressure from the PT’s development wing and avoid an even greater increase in the inflation target to 4% in June.

The CMN is made up of Campos Neto and ministers Fernando Haddad (Finance) and Simone Tebet (Planning). High-ranking members of the government believe that, in addition, the idea is to adapt the inflation target to a more real scenario of the national and global economic situation.

No decision has been taken on the subject and it is not yet known whether the revision of the inflation target will be included in the agenda for next week’s meeting.

A wing of the government prefers to let the matter fall by the wayside if President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva ceases his attacks on the Central Bank. The fear is to further unanchor inflation expectations and cause an increase in long-term interest rates.
