“We’ve done it – Building majorities,” Prime Minister Elizabeth Bourne tweeted early in the morning, with the government clearly relieved. After four days of fighting in the parliament, he achieved his first victory, with the passing of the emergency purchasing power bill. This is a 20 billion package to support low-income families struggling with inflation. It was the first time that the new French parliament managed to agree to pass a bill, which is supported by Prime Minister Bourne and President Macron.
Who could resist such a measure of help… common sense says. But the battle in the parliament was fierce, the debate chaotic and the slur was huge: from “energy irrelevances”, it went to “Green Ayatollahs” and “fascists”. The Union of the Left (NUPES) spoke of a “crumb of shame”, while Le Pen’s extreme right was more condescending, of “a first, but not sufficient” step!
Shortly before six in the morning, the die was cast, the vote was: 341 votes in favor, 116 against and 21 abstentions. The prime minister built her majority with the right and the extreme right. Sample for the most optimistic that France “Yes, could be governed, building majorities by issue”.
This afternoon, there will be another vote to approve an emergency budget to finance the package in question, with discussions likely this weekend.
