Canada: Activist interrupts defense minister, calling for arms shipment to Ukraine to stop

Her speech Minister of Defense of Canada Anita Anand at a forum on democracy was interrupted by a protester who stood in front of the stage, holding a placard against war in Ukraine. The event was temporarily suspended, as the activist refused to leave.

Anand was speaking at Toronto Metropolitan University about Canada’s support for Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion when the cap and bespectacled activist held up the placard addressed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Anand herself and other government ministers.

“Stop the lies. Stop sending weapons. Stop NATO. Peace in Ukraine,” he wrote.

“Can I see the placard, please?” Anand asked the woman. “Thank you for sharing this with me, and I want to say that the aid we are sending to Ukraine is aid that supports democracy, national sovereignty and the rules-based international legal order – the same order that has kept you and everyone in this country safe. hall and our country after the end of the Second World War”, commented the minister.

But the protester refused to leave, and forum host Martin Reg Cohn, a columnist for the Toronto Star, warned her that she was getting too close to the minister’s “personal space.”

“I’m going to take a break, Martin. Thank you very much,” said a visibly uncomfortable Anand, before leaving the stage.

The minister, who earlier this month announced a new military aid package for Ukraine, returned after 10 minutes.

“Thank you for coming back,” Kon said.

“No problem. This is democracy,” she replied.
