Canada: Almost 300,000 sign a petition to revoke Elon Musk’s citizenship

More than 290,000 Canada citizens and residents have signed a parliamentary petition asking the country’s government to revoke citizenship and Elon Musk passport.

The Musk Association with US President Donald Trump, who plans to charge a 25% tariff over all Canadian imports from next month and proposed to attach the country as the 51st American state, is “against interest Canada’s national, ”says the petitioners.

The technology billionaire, a citizen of South Africa, Canada and the USA, has become one of Trump’s most visible allies since the American began his second term last month.

“He used his wealth and power to influence our elections,” says the petition. “He has now become a member of a foreign government that is trying to erase Canadian sovereignty.”

In response to news about the petition, Musk wrote on his social media network that “Canada is not a real country.” THE CNN contacted the representatives of Musk to comment.

The petition, addressed to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, requires him to “revoke Elon Musk’s dual citizenship status and revoke his Canadian passport with immediate effect.”

While an expert told the CNN That the government cannot revoke citizenship legally obtained by Musk, the author of the petition says that this should be seen as a “called accountability.”

Musk, who was born in Pretoria, South Africa, said earlier that he got a Canadian passport as a teenager through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in Canada. The billionaire later obtained American citizenship a decade after arriving in the US with a student visa.

An electronic parliamentary petition requires the initial support of at least five Canadians, the authorization of a parliament member and an initial review before it can start collecting signatures, in accordance with the Canada Chamber.

The petition to revoke Musk’s citizenship is open until June 20, 2025, after which the petition clerk will have to make sure that at least 500 of his signatures are legitimate. From there, the petition should wait until a new session of Parliament is opened before it can be presented to the House of Commons for debate.

Charlie Angus, a member of the Parliament of the New Democratic Party, is listed as the sponsor of the petition. THE CNN He contacted Angus, as well as the author of the petition, Qualia Reed, to comment.

Reed, a science fiction author, wrote on Monday (24) on the social network site Bluesky that they “never expected this petition to spread so much and so fast.” Reed also stressed the growing number of petition supporters that she did not intend to be a personal attack.

“To (be) of course, this action I started, and all of you are spreading and growing, it’s not about personal attacks,” wrote Reed, “It’s about ensuring that those who influence global policies and industries know that people are not well with your lack of ethical responsibility. ”

Trump’s frequent expression about his desire to make Canada the “51st state” was to the point of mocking Trudeau on social networks as the “governor” of Canada. In early February, Trudeau warned a meeting of private sector executives that Trump’s threat to attach Canada “is a real thing,” according to two business leaders who heard the prime minister’s comments.

There are few precedents for revocation of citizenship in Canada. Thousands of Nipo-Canadenses, including citizens, were “effectively denationalized” during World War II and deported back to Japan, according to Toronto University Professor Audrey Macklin, in a 2021 article for Manitoba Law review.

However, “Canada does not repeal the citizenship obtained legally. This means that there is no way to revoke Elon Musk’s Canadian citizenship unless he has obtained it for fraud or misrepresentation, ”Macklin told CNN .

A 2014 law called Strengthening Canadian Citizenship ACT previously included provisions to revoke citizenship if a double -national Canadian were convicted of “national security crimes”.

Trudeau promised to revoke the law when he ran for the prime minister. In 2017, the denaturalization provisions were removed, and a new law renachenced any private Canadian of its citizenship for national security reasons.
