Thirty – nine employees in mine to the east Canada Hundreds of meters from the surface have been trapped since noon on Sunday due to the fact that access to the main exit was blocked, the Vale group, which owns the facility, announced yesterday.
None of the workers have been injured and all have access to food and water, the Brazilian group said, adding that it hoped they would be able to leave the mine soon.
“A rescue crew reached the workers and started pushing them in the direction of a secondary exit, through a system of stairs,” he explained in a statement.

“No one was in the main transport system at the time of the accident,” a Vale spokeswoman told Radio Canada. He clarified that a part of heavy equipment collided with an elevator.
“We understand that the rescue operation will take time and we are relieved to learn that no workers have been injured,” said Doug Ford, head of local government in Ontario, the province where the mine is located, via Twitter.
Operation at the Totten plant in the Sundberry area has been suspended since Sunday and the group said it would assess the situation before production resumes.
The mine was closed in 1972, but Vale proceeded with various works and reopened it in 2014. During the first half of 2021, 3,600 tons of nickel were mined from it.
