Canada: Extremism spreads to the military ranks

The number of supporters of the white supremacist theory and other violent extremists in the Canadian military is growing “at an alarming rate,” according to a report released Monday, accusing the military of failing to do enough to fight the insurgency.

“The reality is that there is widespread racism in our military ranks and we must eliminate it,” said Defense Minister Anita Anand during a news conference.

The report highlights the spread of Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, racism against blacks and indigenous peoples, sexism and homophobia in the Canadian military.

The military’s failure to fight extremism “undermines operational capabilities, undermines (military) prosperity and endangers the security of Canada,” the report said.

Ms Anad said a total of C $ 326.5 million (€ 238 million) had been allocated to the two previous federal budgets to “change the culture in the military”.

But followers of extremist ideologies are hiding better and better, for example by encrypting their communications or using the so-called darknet, according to the report, while efforts to identify them remain “partial and ineffective”.

In addition, various recommendations made over the past 20 years on the issue have remained a dead letter, “incorrectly implemented, buried or abandoned,” said Sandra Perρόνn, one of the report’s authors.

“Once identified, the extremist groups are ‘changing names, changing symbols,'” said General Wayne Eyre, chief of the Canadian National Defense Staff, who called on administrations to be “vigilant and informed” to deal with them.
