Canada grants new loan, sends weapons and ammunition to Kiev

Canada will send weapons to Ukraine and provide it with a new loan of 500 million Canadian dollars (347 million euros), Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trinto announced on Monday.

This is the first time Ottawa has announced that it is sending deadly military equipment and ammunition to Ukraine. The items to be delivered to Kiev are worth C $ 7.8 million, said Justin Trinto.

“The purpose of this support for Canada and our other partners is to prevent Russia from continuing its offensive against Ukraine,” the Canadian prime minister told a news conference, which was largely devoted to the crisis. against health measures to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus pandemic, which has been rocking the North American country for more than two weeks.

By the end of January, Canada had already lent $ 120 million to the Ukrainian government to support the country’s economy.

Western governments and Moscow discussed a possible diplomatic solution to the threat of a Russian-Ukrainian war on Monday, with the United States saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin had not made the “final decision” to order an invasion.

Amid rising tensions, however, Washington has dashed those hopes, arguing that Moscow has further strengthened its military presence on the border with Ukraine, where more than 100,000 troops have been stationed for weeks.
