Canada wants NATO to discuss all scenarios to isolate Russia, Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said when asked if the Alliance should consider imposing a no-fly zone over Ukraine.
Attending an emergency meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Jolie said the Alliance’s red line was not to provoke an international conflict.
But he added: “We want to ensure that all scenarios are discussed.”
NATO must adapt its military position on its eastern wing to the new reality created after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu said, without specifying whether he wants a permanent NATO presence in the region.
“We have to adapt our attitude to the reality, which is that Russian troops are in Ukraine and Belarus, so we have to rethink everything,” he told reporters after attending a NATO meeting.
Romania will increase its defense spending to 2.5% of its GDP from the current 2% from next year, he added.
For her part, Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonite said that calls for a NATO no-fly zone over Ukraine were irresponsible and could drag the Alliance into a direct confrontation with Russia.
“I believe that all calls for NATO to be involved militarily in the conflict are now irresponsible,” Simonite told a news conference in Vilnius.
