The health authorities of the state of Ontario in central Canada have asked her Amazon suspend the operation of its facilities in the area, which employs about 5,000 people, after several hundred employees of the company were infected with coronavirus
Authorities in the Pill area have asked employees at Amazon’s distribution center in Brampton, north of Toronto, to “quarantine for two weeks,” according to a statement issued yesterday.
Excluded from the measure are employees who remained in quarantine after testing positive for Covid-19 in the last three months.
This “difficult” decision was made after more than 600 workers in this warehouse have been positive for coronavirus since the beginning of the pandemic, of which 240 in recent weeks, said a spokesman for the health authorities of Phil.
“In recent weeks, the rate of covid-19 infections has been declining (in the region), but there has been a sharp rise in these facilities,” she said.
The province of Ontario, its most densely populated Canada, is currently severely affected by covid-19. The province has more than a third of the 900,000 coronavirus cases recorded in Canada so far and more than 7,000 deaths from covid-19 out of a total of 22,000 deaths in the country.
Amazon, for its part, announced that it would appeal the decision, adding that the closure of the center could have short-term consequences for its customers in Canada.
According to the e-commerce giant, in the most recent round of mandatory coronavirus tests performed on employees at its Brampton facility, the positivity rate was below 1%.
In February, New York Attorney General Leticia James filed a lawsuit against Amazon over working conditions at two warehouses in Staten Island and Queens amid a coronavirus pandemic.
