Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said today that her country was ready to join the West in imposing Western economic sanctions on Russia if Moscow sent troops to Ukraine, saying the Kremlin had a choice between de-escalation and punishment.
Anand, who met with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, said Canada was ready to support Ukraine and the NATO alliance and reiterated Ottawa’s plans to step up its training mission in the country.
“Russia has an important choice to make. It can choose to negotiate with the aim of de-escalation or it can face severe financial sanctions,” the Canadian foreign minister told reporters.
