Canada will supply Ukraine with anti-tank weapons and upgraded ammunition to support its fight against the Russian invasion, Prime Minister Justin Trinto said on Monday, banning crude oil imports from Russia.
“Canada will continue to support Ukraine’s heroic defense against the Russian military,” Trinto told reporters in Ottawa. “We announce our intention to ban all imports of crude oil from Russia, an industry that has greatly benefited President Putin and his oligarchs.”
Canada imported $ 289 million worth of energy products in 2021, according to the Statistics Canada.
Canada has already sent weapons and non-lethal support to Ukraine and has backed a number of sanctions, including support for Russia’s withdrawal from the SWIFT system for international bank payments.
Canada has also played a role in restricting Russia’s central bank from accessing its foreign exchange reserves.
Earlier on Monday, Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie said the G7 would impose more sanctions on Russia.
