Canada: The province of Quebec restores some restrictions due to Omicron

Quebec will reinstate restrictions on bars, restaurants and shops to limit the spread of the coronavirus Omicron strain, French Prime Minister Francois Lego announced today.

Speaking of a “critical” situation, Lego asked Quebec residents to reduce private gatherings during the Christmas holidays, reducing the number of people at the festive tables to ten.

At the same time, the provincial authorities announced that after the end of the school holidays, the high schools, lyceums and universities will turn to e-learning for at least a week.

Moreover, from Monday, shops, bars, restaurants, theaters, but also places of worship and gyms will be allowed to operate at 50% of their capacity.

The nightclubs and karaoke bars will be closed again, a few weeks after they reopen. Also from Monday, the sports events in Quebec are suspended.

At least 3,700 new covid-19 infections were detected in the province yesterday, surpassing the record daily incidence recorded in January.

“I think no one a few weeks ago could have said we would have 3,700 new cases today,” Lego said.

In the case of the immunization campaign, the interval between the second and third doses of the covid-19 vaccine was reduced to three of the six months. But the commemorative dose will not be open to all age groups yet, as announced on Wednesday by Ontario, the neighboring province of Quebec and Canada’s most populous.
