Two Canadians were arrested for distributing sweets containing cannabis to young children on Halloween night while a child is hospitalized, in another area, near Vancouver, for consuming a similar dessert.
Police in Winnipeg, Manitoba, announced that a 63-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman have been taken into custody because they handed out sweets containing THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main component of cannabis. In total, more than 12 children aged from 6 to 16 received such sweets.
Adults can legally buy cannabis in Canada for recreational purposes.
“As a parent, I am upset about what happened. As a police officer, unfortunately I’m not surprised,” said Officer Danny McKinnon at a press conference. He even urged parents to check what kind of candy their children collected on Halloween night.
The two suspects face 13 counts each of endangerment and providing cannabis to minors..
In suburban Vancouver, western Canada, an 11-year-old boy is hospitalized after unknowingly eating candy containing THC. Police have not yet ascertained where the suspect sweets were obtained from.
