Canada-Ukraine: Canadian Foreign Minister Pledges to Prevent Russian Aggression

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Jolie will visit Kiev next week to reiterate her country’s support for Ukraine’s national sovereignty and to step up efforts to prevent “aggressive actions” by Russia, Ottawa announced today.

Moscow has deployed more than 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine, and the United States yesterday expressed concern that Russia was looking for a pretext to invade if diplomacy failed to achieve its goal.

Canada, which has a fairly large and politically influenced population of Ukrainian descent, has taken a hard line on Moscow since the annexation of Crimea in 2014.

“The accumulation of Russian troops and equipment in and around Ukraine endangers security throughout the region. These offensive actions must be prevented,” Jolie said in a statement.

“Canada will work with its international partners to uphold the rule-based international order,” she added.

Jolie will meet with Ukrainian Prime Minister Dennis Smigal and travel to the west of the country to speak to the 200 Canadian soldiers stationed there since 2015.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trinto had a meeting Tuesday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, to whom he “stressed that a possible military invasion of Ukraine would have serious consequences, including coordinated sanctions,” Trinto’s office said.

Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 440 individuals and entities over the annexation of Crimea.

Jolie, who is embarking on a tour of Europe tomorrow, will visit Brussels, where she will meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and EU High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

He will also visit Paris for talks with French counterpart Jean-Yves Le Drian, according to the announcement.
