The Prime Minister of Ontario, the Canadian province that is at the center of the mobilizations against the health measures, has declared this region a state of emergency, due to the “illegal” demonstrations that have been going on for two weeks.
“We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the opening of the border (including the United States). And to the besieged Ottawa residents, I tell them: we will make sure you can get on with your normal life as soon as possible,” he said. Doug Ford in a press conference he gave.
The prime minister said he would convene a cabinet meeting soon to clarify that it was “illegal and criminally heinous” to block roads and disrupt the transport of goods, the movement of citizens and the operation of services.
Ford also promised that new criminal measures would be taken against the protesters, such as fines and possibly imprisonment for those who disobeyed his government’s orders.
